Anniversary rehearsals for National Day celebrations start

Beijing is rehearsing for China´s 60th anniversary National Day celebrations, from August 28th to September 26th. Rehearsals include a military parade, a pageant and a night gala.

Qixi Festival: Romance for a day

Aug. 26 marks the Qixi Festival, the Chinese Valentine´s Day. According to legend, a fairy called the Weaver Maid incurs the wrath of Heaven when she marries a mortal cowherd. The lovers are allowed to meet only once a year on this day, along the Milky Way.

Wild Great Wall guard -- Mei Jingtian

The 65-year-old man has lived at the foot of the Great Wall since his birth, and regards protecting the Great Wall as his personal mission. Over the past 36 years, he patrolled along the Wall every week, being lapidated, slipping and injuring himself, and being attacked by people who do not understand why he’s doing what he’s doing.

Located outside the Old Summer Palace’s Sanyuan Wall, it is the only old building that wasn´t burned down by a fire started by an Anglo-French Force.
