Never in Olympic history had a host country failed to win a medal. When the 1984 Winter Games were awarded to Sarajevo, it was assumed that this record would, sadly, be broken. Yugoslavia had never won a single medal in any winter sport and had no serious contenders in 1984. However, in the giant slalom, Jure Franko, a 21-year-old Slovenian, recorded the fourth fastest time of the first run. He then skied the best time of the second run and ended up in second place overall to win Yugoslavia's first Winter Olympics medal.
