President Xi Jinping met his South Korean counterpart Park Geun-hye on the sidelines of the G20 summit. Xi made clear of China’s position on the U.S. deployment of the THAAD anti-missile system in South Korea.

Xi said China opposes the deployment and warned careless handling of the issue would “aggravate contradictions.”

Xi said the two countries should keep up the mutual trust to overcome difficulties and challenges while safeguarding their cooperative results. He added that both sides should respect each other’s core interests and ensure the China-ROK ties advance in a stable and sustainable way.

Xi reaffirmed China’s commitment to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula for long-term peace and stability in the region.

Park said South Korea attaches great importance to China. She agreed that the two countries should further deepen their relations, based on mutual trust.
