Full coverage: THAAD Deployment in South Korea
A senior official from the US Department of Defense has visited South Korea to defend the deployment of the THAAD system. James Syring, the director of the Missile Defense Agency, said that THAAD will only be used for protecting South Korea from the DPRK, not China.
"The THAAD radar deployment in Korea will purely be an alliance information sharing arrangement. Only information from that system will be shared with US and Republic of Korea. It will not be disseminated to the wire missile defence network." Director of the US Missile Defense Agency James Syring said.
The planned installation of THAAD in South Korea has been protested by neighboring coutries including China and Russia. Beijing has warned the deployment will damage the strategic balance and security interests of countries in the region. And in South Korea, the debate on the need for and safety of THAAD continues. Residents in Seongju County have held daily demonstrations since their area was announced as the deployment location for THAAD.
