Full coverage: THAAD Deployment in South Korea
Contrary to the protests against THAAD in South Korea, the Japanese Defense Ministry says they will soon discuss whether to deploy a THAAD system of their own. The consideration comes after one of the DPRK's mid-ranged missiles landed in Japan's exclusive economic zone for the first time.
Japan said the incident posed a big threat to its security, and that it may speed up the implementation of a THAAD system. Tokyo began its discussion over THAAD in November last year. However, the proposal was reportedly met with a mixed response from Washington.
South Korea has said it can provide Japan with intelligence gathered by the THAAD system. South Korea, Japan and the US signed a trilateral intelligence-sharing pact in 2014.
