One fisherman has died and three others were injured after Taiwan launched a missile by mistake during a rehearsal Friday. The Taiwan authority says the missile was launched from a corvette in Zuoying Harbor in Kaohsiung due to human error.
The missile fell into the waters off Penghu Island after hitting a fishing boat. The captain was killed. Three of his crew were injured. Taiwan apologized for causing casualties.
The mainland's Taiwan affairs chief Zhang Zhijun has urged Taiwan authorities to give a "responsible explanation" for the fatal misfire. He said that "the incident occurred and caused severe impact at a time, when the mainland has repeatedly emphasized safeguarding peaceful development of cross-Strait relations based on the political foundation of the 1992 Consensus."
