US Senator John McCain is on a two-day visit to Afghanistan. The visit comes as the top US and NATO commander in Afghanistan, General Stanley McChrystal is working on a strategy review of the war.
The former Republican presidential candidate will meet US Marines in southern Helmand province, where US and Afghan forces are staging a major offensive against Taliban militants ahead of Thursday's vote.
McCain called for more American troops, saying that doubling the number of Marines in Helmand could lead to "significantly more success."
President Barack Obama has already ordered additional deployments that will put a record number of US troops in Afghanistan by year's end.
John McCain, US Senator, said, "It is very clear to me that more resources are needed in the form of additional troops as well as material, economic and other support. The troop levels, I believe, need to be significantly increased.
McCain also calls Afghanistan's upcoming elections a milestone event, but says the US is not backing one candidate over another.
