Two mortar rounds landed near the presidential palace in Kabul on Tuesday, two days ahead of the presidential election, according to a US military spokesperson.

An Afghan official reported that no one was injured in the attack. Authorities have ringed the capital with security forces and checkpoints in an attempt to prevent any major insurgent strikes.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, and previously vowed to disrupt the August 20 election. The militant group has already fired rockets at the capital twice this month.
