Web surfers around the world can browse the collection of the World Digital Library for free at www.wdl.org.

The opening ceremony was held Tuesday in Paris, the home of Unesco's Headquarters. The World Digital Library holds books, archives, records, and pictures that were collected by national libraries on all five continents.

Dr. James H. Billington, the director of the US Library of Congress says the World Library on line is the product of three years' of efforts by the project's organizers and each of the cooperating libraries.

Billington says the project got support from thirty national libraries from around the globe, including the national libraries of Brazil, Germany, French and China. There are search engines with all major languages used in the world.

The National Library of China has contributed 20 items from its vintage collections to the World Digital Library, such as an old atlas.
