Kim Jong Il re-elected DPRK´s top leader

The 12th Supreme People's Assembly of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea elected Kim Jong Il as chairman of the country's National Defence Commission on Thursday.

State media says this reflects the unanimous will and wishes of all the service persons and people.

State media says Kim was re-elected by lawmakers at the opening session of the new Assembly. Under the constitution, this makes him the nation's top leader.

This comes days after the DPRK's controversial rocket launch. Pyongyang calls Japan's searching for rocket debris an "unbearable military provocation", and warns it will not overlook the move.
