Following months of protests and public outcry, South Korea has announced a change of site for the controversial US defense system THAAD. Lotte Skyhill Country Club in northern Seongju is now set to be the new location for the system.
The country had initially picked Seongsan artillery base but began reviewing three other candidate sites as an alternative host, after local residents demanded a switch.
Located 18 kilometers north of the Seongju County center, the golf course is away from the originally designated site but is closer to the southeastern city of Gimcheon, which has a population of about 140,000. It sits 680 meters above sea level, about 300 meters higher than the originally designated artillery base location.
