Aung San Suu Kyi made her first speech at the UN General Assembly since becoming State Counsellor of Myanmar, and called for international understanding as her country deals with sectarian unrest.

The Nobel laureate said her new government was standing firm against prejudice and intolerance.

Myanmar's new State Counsellor's first ever speech before the UN General Assembly was a landmark moment, as the country transitions away from military rule.

Aung San Suu Kyi said that the world had focused its attention on the troubled Rakhine state, where tensions between majority Buddhists and Muslim Rohingya turned violent in 2012.

We do not, she said, fear international scrutiny, and are committed to a sustainable solution that will lead to peace for all communities.

But Ms. Suu Kyi didn't mention the Rohingya people by name in her speech- a contentious issue among Buddhists, who consider them to be illegal immigrants from neighbouring Bangladesh and refer to them as Bengali. Around 100,000 such people are still in displacement camps.

Former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan is leading an advisory panel aimed at finding solutions to the conflict in the state, and Ms Suu Kyi said she will back the the commission, of nine members - it will cover humanitarian, development and security issues there, and she asked for the understanding and constructive contribution of the international community.

The 71 year old is the daughter of Myanmar's founding father, and she said that after her party's election victory in November, her government's highest priority is national reconciliation.
