During her time there, Suu Kyi held talks with local officials and visited places of interest. During the talks, both sides agreed to advance cooperation between local governments in education and agriculture.

Suu Kyi paid a five-day visit to China at the invitation of Premier Li Keqiang.

It's the first visit to China, by a Myanmar leader, since its new government took office in April, and also Suu Kyi's first overseas trip to a non-ASEAN country since taking office.

As Aung San Suu Kyi's visit comes to an end, a Chinese expert suggests her visit reinforced the foundation for developing bilateral relations.

Du Lan, of the China Institute of International Studies, says the visit will give Myanmar a lead in pragmatic cooperation with its neighbor.

"Myanmar's diplomatic principles are to develop friendly relations with its neighbors and at the same time to develop relations with major countries in the world. Her first two visits since March were to Laos and Thailand. Both are important ASEAN neighbors to Myanmar. Considering that China is both its neighbor and a major world power, she attaches great importance to the development of Myanmar-China relations."

Du said that peace process and economic development are two major challenges to Myanmar's new government and China is willing to provide necessary help in these aspects.

Du also said that Myanmar will play a coordinating role in the South China Sea dispute.

"Myanmar is neither a coastal country to the South China Sea nor a claimant country in the South China Sea dispute. But it is playing an increasingly active role in the affairs of the Association of Southeast Nations (ASEAN). Also as Myanmar has a diplomatic concept furthering balance and independence, it is expected to play a coordinating role in the South China Sea issue between China and other ASEAN member countries."

During her visit, the two countries inked a series of agreements covering economy, trade, people's livelihood and infrastructure development.

Chinese President Xi Jinping also pledged that China will continue to play a constructive role in promoting Myanmar's peace process and working with the country to safeguard peace and stability in their border areas.
