President Xi pledges to support Myanmar peace talks

And Chinese President Xi Jinping promised to support Myanmar's peace process.

One of the key topics discussed during Suu Kyi's trip is the US$3.6 billion Beijing-backed Myitsone dam.

The Myanmar government suspended construction in 2011 after critics said creating a reservoir the size of Singapore will definitely impact the environment and affect local residents.

But the dam continues to be an essential piece of infrastructure for the Southeast Asian nation, as it desperately needs to boost its own economic growth, and improve the livelihood of its people.

Suu Kyi confirmed that Myanmar had set up a committee to review the project in order to find a "proper solution.

She will wrap up her five-day trip with a visit to Yunnan Province -- a region along China's southwest border with strong ethic and cultural links to Myanmar.

China continues to forge deeper ties with its neighbour, with the foreign ministry voicing support for the peace process. It stated that a "politically stable and economically prosperous Myanmar is in China’s best interests."
