Late last week, former Tour de France champion Albero Contador had to withdraw from the race because of injuries and illness. Those maladies will also keep him out of the upcoming Olympics.
The Spainard making the decision after talking with his medical team, and they felt he would not be ready to compete in early August -- but he might be back in time for the sport's next big event, the Spanish Vuelta, which begins August 20th.
"As far as the Olympics are concerned, taking into account the doctor's diagnosis, it's almost ruled out that I can participate. The question is not whether I recovered from the injuries, but whether I can perform in optimal conditions. And it looks like that is not going to be possible. We'll need to focus on recovery and being ready for the Vuelta a Espana, which starts two weeks afterwards and I believe I can get there on time," said Albero Contador.
