The United States has announced the deployment of the anti-missile THAAD system to south Korea. Officials from the two countries said they will try to deploy it as soon as possible, but the exact location and date have yet to be determined.

"Based on what has been discussed so far, the Republic of Korea and United States have decided, in terms of ROK-US alliance, to deploy the THAAD system in ROK as a defensive measure. This is to secure the safety of ROK, and our people from threats of the DPRK's nuclear weapons, weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missiles, and to protect the military powers of the ROK-US alliance," said Yoo Jeh-Seung, S. Korean Defense Deputy Minister for Policy.

THAAD stands for Terminal High-Altitude Area Defence, and is a system designed to shoot down ballistic missiles in their terminal phase. The THAAD's radar can locate missiles from as far as 2-thousand kilometers, which spans far beyond the DPRK territory.
