While Kobe was ending his history in the NBA with another remarkable performance, Steph Currry and the Golden State Warriors were busy making history.
The defending champions beat the Memphis Grizzlies 125-104 at home for their 73rd win and the best record ever in the regular season, passing the 72-game mark set by Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls 20 years that was once considered untouchable.
Warriors set league record with 73rd victory
Curry and his men look to best the mark set by the 1995-96 Bulls, a team that also included current Golden State coach Steve Kerr.
Dubs guard Curry connects from distance to put the Warriors on top 27-16 with four minutes remaining in the opening quarter. Golden State would lead 37-23 at the end of the first Q.
Curry's fellow Splash Brother Klay Thompson also does his part, sliding behind the arc to knock down a triple of his own giving the Dubs a 20-point lead.
With time winding down in the second quarter, Curry is left all alone and you can probably fill in the rest. Golden State in total control as they take a 70-50 lead into halftime.
Early in the third, Curry is going to find some space and score his 400th three-pointer of the season to set a new regular season record and break his old mark of 286. No one had ever made 300 in a campaign, but Curry skips that mark and goes right along to the next century.
And when Curry isn't making baskets, he's setting them up he finds Andrew Bogut down low and the Australian puts the Warriors back up by 20.
How about a highlight from the other guys. Zach Randolph bulls in and trims the Grizzlies deficit to 84-70 midway through the third.
Curry then cans another trey to give Golden State a 21-point lead at the end of the third quarter. Curry hits 10 from long range on the way to 46 points and 402 total three-pointers. Golden State cruises to a 125-104 win to set an NBA record for most wins in a single season, a staggering 73 wins and only 9 losses.
In the other Games on Thursday, Houston beat Sacramento 116-81 to secure the final place in the post season. They will face defending champions Golden State in the opening round. 2nd-placed San Antonio take on Memphis, Oklahoma City face Dallas, while the L.A. Clippers clash with Portland.
In the east, leaders Cleveland are up against Detroit, second seed Toronto face Indiana, Miami takes on Charlotte, and Atlanta draw Boston.
