Special Report: Iran presidential election 09 |
Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has called for calm and patience in the country following street rallies in protest at results from recent presidential elections.
He has also ruled out the possibility of any manipulation of votes. The speech delivered at Friday prayers in Tehran University marks Ayatollah Khamenei's first public appearance after almost a week of protests by pro-opposition supporters.
Ayatollah Khamenei said there should be no question about the election result, which was a clear victory for President Ahmed Ahmedinejad.
He also denied there had been any vote manipulation, as was claimed by supporters of the opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi. He said the people's voice had been heard through the elections.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's Supreme Leader, said, "This is an election, it's the privilege of the people and it has always been like this. People made the choice."
Khamenei said that the country's election mechanism does not allow for any cheating and it is wrong to resort to street protests to exert pressure. He warned protesters that "they will be responsible for any consequences of violence and chaos."
