Thousands of Iranians took to the streets of Tehran on Tuesday in rival demonstrations over the country's disputed presidential election. This pushed the crisis into its fourth day.

The government's earlier announcement that a limited number of ballots will be re-counted apparently failed to placate the opposition.

A large column of Mir Hossein Mousavi's supporters marched peacefully along an avenue in Tehran.

And, on Tuesday afternoon, the government organized a large rally in the city.

Thousands waved Iranian flags and pictures of the supreme leader.

A pro-Ahmadinejad protester said, "All this unrest is coordinated by foreigners. It is coordinated by Israel and America and we should strongly confront foreigners."

In a message on his Web site, Mousavi urged his supporters not to resort to violence.

The Web site said Mousavi and his supporters planned another large demonstration for Wednesday afternoon.

Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said on Tuesday that a vote re-count must be carried out in the presence of representatives of the presidential candidates.
