Special Report: Iran presidential election 09 |
Iran's Guardian Council has confirmed it is ready to recount specific ballot boxes over alleged election fraud.
Meanwhile, the country's state radio reported clashes in the Iranian capital had left seven people dead during a mass rally.
Iran's Islamic leadership is prepared to conduct a limited recount of disputed presidential election results.
The decision was made after the country's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, ordered an examination of the fraud allegations on Monday.
The Iranian Guardian Council said on Tuesday the recount would be limited to voting sites where candidates claimed irregularities occurred.
Ayatollah Ahmadi Jannati, Head of the Guardian Council, said, "As is our responsibility, we will accept his order and are ready for fulfilling this duty. This is our legal duty though. It's based on the constitutional law. The Guardian Council is obliged to investigate any such claim after an election."
The 12-member Guardian Council includes clerics and experts in Islamic law. Its role includes certifying election results.
