Italian rider Filippo Pozzato of the Liquigas team won the fifth stage of the Tour de France on Thursday. Swiss rider Fabian Cancellara increased his lead at the top of the general classification, but there was bad news for the Astana team, whose two riders had to be taken to hospital after crashing.

The riders in the Tour de France faced an uphill struggle in Thursday's fifth stage.

Giampaolo Chuela went in pursuit of the group and led the peloton.

Chavanel and Gilbert dropped Bonnet and Chuela on the climb up the Haut-Folin.

Alexandre Vinokourov suffered the same fate as fellow Astana rider Kloeden, crashing 25 kilometres from the finish.

The two leaders were caught by the main bunch with just over ten kilometres to go.

Fabian Cancellara then saw a chance to pick up his third win of this year's Tour, but he went wide at a corner while descending.

The stage came down to a bunch sprint, which Italian Filippo Pozzato won to take the day's honours in a time of four hours, 39 minutes and one second.
