Thor Hushovd has won the fourth stage of the Tour de France. The Norwegian held his nerve in the sprint finish to win first, ahead of Robert Hunter of South Africa. But it was Swiss rider Fabian Cancellara who kept the overall lead for a fifth straight day.

Stage four was another relatively flat jaunt in the countryside.

The almost predictable early break came almost one-sixth of the way into stage with five men involved.

In the peloton, Staf Scheirlinckx and Matteo Tosatto took a tumble 48 kilometres from the end, although both were able to continue.

And another 32 kilometres further on, it was the turn of Anthony Geslin to part company with his bike.

The leaders amassed a four-minute advantage at one point.

But predictably, they were later swallowed up by the peloton.
