Special Report:   2008 Beijing Olympics

Beijing will welcome the 2008 Olympics in about 500 days. So far, the construction of Venues is going along well. Our reporter Zhou Lei files this report from two symbolic Olympic venues to find out more about how things are progressing.

The 2008 Olympics' opening and closing ceremonies will be held at the bird's nest-National Stadium. Located at the Olympic Green, it has a floor space of 258,000 sq meters. The twig-like structural elements and the bowl-shape roof are the masterpiece of this project. Three years and four months have passed since earthworks started in December 2003. The uninstallation of the steel structure of the National Stadium was finished successfully on December 17th, 2006.

While the National Swimming Center, also dubbed the "Water Cube", is the biggest swimming center in the world and has adopted state-of-the-art technology and materials in its construction. The National Swimming Center is definitely a fine example of "High-tech Olympics".

Construction of the two symbolic Olympic venues is going smoothly and there's no doubt that the venues will be completed right on schedule.

With 500 days to go until the opening of the Beijing Olympics, the city's venues are well underway. The centerpieces of the 2008 Games -- the Bird's Nest and Water Cube -- will be ready to welcome athletes early next year. And BOCOG will further test how well it's prepared by staging various events as part of a "Good Luck Beijing" series.
