Special Report:   2008 Beijing Olympics

The first round of a competition to design the fences for the 2008 Olympics showjumping events has been completed. More than two thousand entries have been whittled down to just 60. They will go on display later this month in Hong Kong, the venue of the equestrian events next year, and mark the 500 day countdown to the Games itself.

The competition to design the show jumping fences is being held to give people in Hong Kong and overseas a chance to take

part in the Beijing Olympics. And the organizers hope it will encourage students to explore what the Olympics are about and learn more about the Olympic equestrian events which will be held in Hong Kong. They also hope people will examine Chinese culture and Hong Kong's identity.

The entries are divided into three categories: junior, senior, and professional. Cash prices of ten thousand, eight thousand, and five thousand HK dollars will be awarded to the top three entries in each category. The winners will be announced on April the first.

Outstanding entries will also be considered for a trial event in August this year.
