The Chinese Mothers Festival has opened in Zoucheng. The city in eastern China's Shandong Province, is the hometown of ancient philosopher Meng Tze, known in the West as Mencius.

The festival honors Mencius' mother, and her formative role in the life a philosopher who's arguably the most famous Confucian after Confucius himself.

Mencius' descendants from China and overseas along with other dignitaries gathered in the Mencius Temple to pay homage to their ancestor.

Mencius lived more than 2300 years ago. The itinerant philosopher and sage was one of the principal interpreters of Confucianism.
