Special Report:   Tibetan New Year

Wednesday marked the first day of the new year according to the Tibetan calendar. Tibetans began celebrating with a string of cultural activities. And families are getting together to enjoy traditional feasts.

A photo exhibition entitled "Democratic Reform in Tibet" opened Wednesday in Beijing to mark the 50th anniversary of the democratic reform in the Tibet Autonomous Region. The show has attracted visitors of all ages, especially Tibetan university students.

The event is the first large-scale exhibition of its kind. Items on display show the dark side of the old society, the peaceful liberation in 1951, and the social development after 50 years of democratic reform.

The exhibition has received four hundred visitors so far.

And students at the Beijing Tibetan Middle School dressed in their traditional attire to celebrate the Losar, the Tibeten New Year. The boarding school was established in 1987. It receives students from seven areas of the Tibet Autonomous Region, including Lhasa, Shannan, and Nakqu. Over three thousand students have graduated from the school, and over two thousand have returned to Tibet to work.

In Chengdu, capital of Southwest China's Sichuan Province, the Kesang Yeshe family has been preparing for the big occasion the whole Wednesday. Early in the morning, they place new offerings for the Buddha statues in their home. Then comes the preparation for the night's banquet.
