Special Report:   2007 Spring Festival

Despite rising prices, bookings for Spring Festival holidays are at a record this year. Agencies say, overseas tours are all booked-up and most domestic packages are also full.

But our reporter Zhou Ling tells us that there are still a some packages at cheaper prices, if we know where to look.

To cost of over 3,000 yuan for a hotel room might be amazing, but is what you can expect in China during this year's Spring Festival holidays.

According to the prices quoted by travel agencies, tours for top domestic destinations like Hainan and Yunnan have all increased by over 25%. And the prices for certain luxury local tours cost as much as tours for overseas destinations. But travellers are not deterred. Despite the price hike, most tours have been sold out.

Liang Yuan, marketing manager of CTI Cosco Travel Ltd., said "For travel groups, we usually book the air tickets and hotels over one-month before the Spring Festival holidays. Once the booking is settled, it's very hard to add more people."

But there are still some ways to save money during this holiday season. Travel agencies say the prices could be cut by half as soon as the seven-day holiday ends. Meanwhile, even during the golden week holidays, packages for the last four days will also be less than the first three days. And the prices will also be cut day by day during the week. So tourists are adviced to wait and shop around for the best prices.
