Former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein is dead.
The US-backed Iraqi television station, Al Hurra announced that Saddam was executed by hanging just over an hour ago. On Tuesday, an appeals court upheld the sentencing for Saddam to be hanged, after he appealed.
The former Iraqi president was ousted in April 2003 and convicted of crimes against humanity this November. The execution plans were kept completely secret amid concerns they would spark a violent backlash from Saddam's supporters.
