Iran's government has blamed the bombing on an armed opposition group that it said operated under the direction of Israel and the US.

Iran also directed suspicion at the exiled opposition group, the People's Mu-ja-hedeen Organization of Iran. Israel's Foreign Ministry had no comment, while the US State Department rejected suggestions it was linked to the incident as absurd.

Gordon Duguid, Spokesman of US State Department, said, "The fact remains we are working within prescribed diplomatic channels to engage the government of Iran on their behaviour. Their nuclear program is of particular concern to us, as you know, and that is what we are working with the government on."
