The six powers have met in Germany to address concerns over Iran's nuclear programme. A German official urged Iran to agree to talks before the United Nations General Assembly meets later this month.

China's Vice Foreign Minister, He Yafei, says China hopes for an early resumption of talks on the Iranian nuclear issue. He made the remarks after meeting with senior officials involved in the negotiations. The five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany, met to discuss solutions to the nuclear issue, a day after Tehran offered new proposals.

The closed-door meeting took place in Koenigstein near Frankfurt. It was attended by vice foreign ministers from the US, France, Britain, Russia, China and Germany.

The meeting was scheduled before Iran's top nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili, told reporters he would put forward new proposals for the negotiations. Jalili said on Tuesday, Iran would open talks "to ease common concerns in the international arena."

He gave no further details on Tehran's plans.

Speaking after the meeting, the German vice foreign minister, Volker Stanzel expressed hope for a positive result.
