Some European Parliament members have refuted claims of leader of the World Uygur Congress, Rebiya Kadeer, regarding Xinjiang independence. At a discussion hosted by the European Parliament's Sub-Committee on Human Rights, Kadeer used the Urumqi riots on July 5th, to attack the Chinese government's ethnic minority and religious policies.

The president of the EU-China Friendship Group, Nirj Deva, reminded Kadeer that Chinese government policies allowed her to achieve tremendous wealth, and that she was chosen to join China's top political advisory body.

European Parliament member Charles Tannock cited China's preferential policies for ethnic minorities and the numerous and newly built mosques to guarantee Islamic religious beliefs. Tannock also says the European Parliament should not support separatist forces inside China or any sponsored extremist religious organizations.
