Airports and airlines around the world have tightened security since the foiled attack. But questions are being asked about how the Nigerian boarded the flight with explosive materials despite higher security worldwide since the 9/11 attacks.

The head of Nigeria's Civil Aviation Authority said Abdulmutallab had been through the usual screening procedures at Lagos airport before boarding the KLM flight.

Harold Demuren, Director General of Nigerian Cival Aviation Authority, said, "The passenger did not check-in any baggage but was spotted with a shoulder bag. The passenger went through normal check-in process, his passport was scanned, his US visa was scanned and his Advanced Passenger Information Server System returned no objection."
