A senior Nigerian aviation official says the suspect went through the usual screening procedures at Lagos Airport, before boarding a flight to Amsterdam.

Harold Demuren, Director-General, Nigeria Cival Aviation Authority, said, "The passenger did not check in any baggage, but was spotted with a shoulder bag. The passenger went through normal check-in process. His passport was scanned, his US visa was scanned, and his (APS) which we call, Advanced Passenger Information Server System, returned no objection."

The Director-General says the suspect possesses a multiple-entry U.S. visa, issued in London last year, and set to expire next June.

Abdul-mutal-lab was carrying an explosive device consisting of a six-inch packet of powder, and a syringe containing a liquid, all sewn into his underwear.

Reports say the suspect, a respected Nigerian banker's son, was denied a visa to enter Britain last May, after applying to take a course at a bogus college.
