Sweden to help fight Afghan corruption

2009-11-11 14:25 BJT

Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt has met his Afghan counterpart Rangeen Dadfar Spanta in Kabul. Bildt said that Sweden supports the fight against corruption in Afghanistan.

Bildt is the most senior Western official to visit Afghanistan since Karzai was re-elected President last week.

His visit on Tuesday was aimed at mending ties between the European Union and Afghanistan. Bildt also said he wants to kick-start a new EU plan to boost economic development and curb corruption in the conflict-torn country.

Carl Bildt, Swedish Foreign Minister, said, "We are prepared to give all of the help that we can give, in terms of practices and methods of dealing with corruption. Corruption is a cancer in every society, and it is a difficult cancer to deal with. But it is a cancer that needs to be dealt with."
