Special Report: Afghan presidential election |

Afghan President Hamid Karzai's re-election last month has been approved by the UN General Assembly. The UN declared on Monday the election had been credible and sound.

The 192-nation assembly unanimously approved a resolution to recognize the election, despite widespread allegations of fraud.

The resolution praised the country's handling of voter irregularities that put Karzai's victory in question.

Afghanistan's UN Ambassador, Zahir Tanin, told the General Assembly his country and government were grateful for the vote of confidence.
