US President Barack Obama says he will make his decision on new troops for Afghanistan in "the coming weeks."

The president says his administration is "going through a very deliberate process" to determine how the US will proceed.

Barack Obama says although decisions on the military front are important, that's just one aspect of the improvements needed for the US strategy in the region.

Barack Obama, US President, said, "Another element of it is making sure that we are doing a good job in helping build capacity on the civilian side in areas like Agriculture and education. And I would expect that we will have a completion of this current process in the coming weeks."

Obama made the remark after his meeting with visiting Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero in the Oval Office.

The White House is in the midst of an intensely debated review over how to overhaul its approach to the Afghan conflict.

Obama has held four top-level meetings with key administration officials on the subject. A fifth meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, and a sixth will be held next week.

Zapatero says Spain's commitment to Afghanistan remains "firm."
