Japan is to look at new ways of providing support to Afghanistan when it stops refueling American warships in the Indian Ocean next year.

Japanese Defense Minister has confirmed in a statement that Japan will end its refueling mission in January when a temporary law backing it expires.

The statement was made on Tuesday when Toshimi Kitazawa visited Afghanistan. Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force (MSDF) ships sent on the refueling mission in the Indian Ocean will withdraw next January.

Japan is committed to paying all Afghan police salaries for six months and is funding a number of infrastructure, agriculture and education projects.

It is also sponsoring a health initiative to provide children with vaccine drops to prevent Polio.
