The Philadelphia Flyers hosted the Washington Capitals for their first meeting in the highly competitive Metropolitan Division.

After going on a ten game winning streak, the Flyers entered a mini-slump that saw them lose two games in a row. And they would find themselves down once again in this one until Claude Giroux scored to set up some late excitement in a close contest.

Pick it up late in the first period with the Capitals pressing the attack in Philly's zone. Dimitry Orlov centers it to Andre Burakovsky and he waits before slinging a wristshot past Steve Mason. His third goal of the season makes it 1-0 Caps.

Less than five minutes into the second period and Radko Gudas' blast goes behind the net and Michael Raffl wraps around to tuck it in. The ref and red light signals a goal, but there would be some dispute. But the replay vindicates the ref's decision as the puck can clearly be seen crossing the line despite Braden Holtby's efforts and it's 1-1.

Midway through the second, Lars Eller chases down the lead pass and feeds Burakovsky. His shot is stopped, but the rebound is stolen and Eller gets the last touch to give the Capitals the lead at 2-1.

Near the end of the period it's 4 on 4 and Holtby comes up with a great save on Ivan Provorov, but the Flyers keep it in the zone and Girouz loads up on a wrist shot that beats Holtby glove side and his tenth of the season ties it at two.

No scoring in the third and overtime settles nothing so a shootout is needed. Wayne Simmonds has a chance to win it for the Flyers and he moves in slowly before making a quick move and lifting it past Holtby.

Steve Mason would stop Justin Williams for Philly's win. Only one other game on the schedule in which Edmonton beat Arizona for the first time in regulation in 26 games, 3-2.
