Three-time Olympic silver medalist Lee Chong Wei faced Denmark's Viktor Axelsen in a men's singles Group B encounter. With both the Malaysian and the Rio Olympics bronze medalist having recorded one win and one loss in the group, the winner of this would qualify for the semi-finals.
This is the tenth meeting between the pair with 22 year old Axelsen yet to register a victory against the 34 year old Lee, but that would change.
Lee set to serve on match point in the first game and Axelsen is able to return the smash but Lee continues his attack. The Dane tries to take control but sends the birdie just wide and Lee wins it 21-14.
The score is reversed in the second and Axelsen now has game point which he wins when Lee hits the net. 21-14 for the Dane.
The third is more competitive and Axelsen forces Lee into a dive and the Malaysian is able to recover and do the same to the Dane who comes up short and the scores is tied at 18.
But Axelsen now has match point, and Lee goes down with a whimper as he serves into the net and Axelsen wins a long one hour and 12 minute match, 21-19 in the third for his first win over Lee and a spot in the semi-finals.
"I thought I performed well. I couldn't imagine that I'd take part in the Rio Olympics and played a full schedule this year while also keeping the world number one ranking. People may feel it was a pity that I didn't win the Olympic gold medal. But I tried my best and the most important thing was I kept going on. I think my effort was worth it and now I'm going to take a rest before beginning my preparations for next year," Li said.
In the men's doubles, Chinese pair Chai Biao and Hong Wei took on Malaysian duo V Shem Goh and Wee Kiong Tan for first place in their group. China get off to a good start and when the Malaysian's send their shot wide, China win the first game 21-16.
But the tables are turned in the second as a smash allows Malaysia to take it 21-13 and force a decider.
The third game would be even closer, but Malaysia now has match point leading 21-20. China hits the net and Malaysia wins, but both teams advance to the semi-finals.
