Four years ago China swept all the titles in London, but things have not gone their way in Rio, as they have failed to finish on top of the podium in the women's doubles, women's singles, and mixed doubles events. But the squad had a chance to grab gold in men's doubles.

Fu Haifeng and Zhang Nan held firm to win gold after beating Malaysian opponents Goh V. Shem and Tan Wee Kiong. It was a three-set affair, with the chinese prevailing 16-21 21-11 23-21, denying the Malaysian's their first ever Olympic gold medal. It is the 32-year-old Fu's second Olympic gold after winning the doubles title with Cai Yun in London.

In men's singles, two-time defending champ Lin Dan's reign is over after falling to rival Lee Chong Wei in their much-anticipated semi-final. The pair, regarded by many as the greatest players of all time, have dominated the sport in recent years, with Lin leading the head-to head record 25-11 before the match. That included wins at two olympic finals and two World Championship finals. But this time the Malaysian would be victorious claiming a 15-21, 21-11, 22-20 win. Lee will now play China's Chen Long who beat Danish fourth seed Viktor Axelsen to make the final.

China claim silver while Japan swim to bronze

In synchronised swimming, Russia won their fifth straight Olympics with a total score of 196.1439 points. China would finishing 3.1598 behind to grab the silver with Japan, returning to the podium for the first time since 2004, taking the bronze.

Lin Xiyu first female to make Olympic hole-in-one

And history was made in women's golf, by China's Lin Xiyu. The 58th ranked player Lin would step-up and fire away from 154 yards away on the par-three 8th hole, and was absolutely perfect, firing a hole-in-one. The first ever ace in the women's game at an Olympiad. That highlighted her tournament, because she is 18-shots off the pace being set by leader Inbee Park. The South Korean is sitting at minus-11 after three rounds. China's Feng Shanshan is three-shots behind the leader in fourth.
