Iranian President Hassan Rouhani demanded on Sunday that US President Barack Obama not sign an extension of sanctions against his country, saying the bill is a violation of a landmark nuclear deal struck between Iran and world powers.

"We believe the recent decision by the US congress does not conform with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action and violates the deal. Therefore the president is obliged to use his powers to stop approval of the extenstion to the Iran Sanctions Act. I openly announce that if this act is enforced, it would prove an obvious violation of the nuclear deal and it will be followed by our prompt response," Hassan Rouhani said.

The White House says Obama is expected to sign the bill. The 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and six world powers, lifted a range of international sanctions in exchange for limitations on Iran's nuclear program. However the US still maintains its own separate set of sanctions.
