Chinese President Xi Jinping has concluded his first state visit to Peru, the second leg of his three-nation tour to Latin America. China is Peru's largest trading partner, spurred in recent years by Chinese demand for Peru's mineral resources. CCTV's Dan Collyns reports from Lima.

President Xi Jinping began his official visit to Peru with a full military fanfare welcome. Xi was greeted by his Peruvian counterpart Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, alongside their wives, Peng Liyuan and Nancy Lange. This was a reciprocal visit by the Chinese leader as Kuczynski visited China in September just a month after taking office.

Dan Collyns said, "The pomp and circumstance of this official visit reflects the strength of Chinese and Peruvian relations. Peru is already one of the top destinations in Latin America for Chinese investment but on this visit President Xi wants to emphasize people-people exchanges to bring the two nations even closer together. "

At Peru's Congress, President Xi was awarded the Medal of Honor. He then highlighted the importance of two countries relations in a speech to the chamber: "This year marks the 45th year anniversary since China and Peru established diplomatic ties. Over the years, the bilateral relationship has grown based on sincerity, equality and mutual benefit. We established the comprehensive strategic partnership in 2013. The two-way cooperation has deepened on all fronts ever since."

Earlier, the two leaders and their cabinets signed a series of agreements as part of a five-year cooperation roadmap. They pledged to work together in sectors ranging from mining to tourism, and even on the environment.

Memorandums of understanding were also signed to improve industrialization and advance an existing bilateral free trade agreement. Analysts say China is looking long-term in Latin America.

"I think we can speculate that certainly with the visit this week of leader Xi and the Chinese delegation that China will be raising its profile even more." said vice president of Society of the Americas, Eric Farnsworth.

With this three country visit, Xi is looking to boost engagement with key partners in the region amid uncertainty about future ties with the United States.
