In the ATP World tour finals, the new world number one Andy Murray, who has never reached the final at the event, needs to do just that -- and capture to title in London to ensure that Novak Djokovic doesn't usurp him for the top ranking in men's tennis. And the Scot would get his campaign underway in style against Marin Cilic.
Murray was playing his first match since officially becoming number one in the world and got a nice ovation from the crowd at the 02 Arena.
The Scot was riding a 19-match winning streak coming in and looked good early on exchanging shots from the baseline with the Croat and he is able to get an early break, when Cilic fires this return wide.
And another error from the 2014 U-S Open champ, who is wearing board shorts circa 1988 hands Murray the set 6-3.
Cilic would play better in the second, and this big forehand down the line is indictive of that.
Despite that Murray was playing like the world number one, getting a break in the fifth game, ripping a forehand winner that gives him a 3-2 edge.
That propelled the Scot to win the next three games in succession -- closing out the match on his serve, and winning the game at love, when Cilic finds the net. Murray claims a 6-3, 6-2 victory in an hour and 30 minutes, and runs his win streak to 20 matches.
NISHIKORI TOPS WAWRINKA 6-2, 6-3
Kei Nishikori at the bottom of your screen would face Stan Wawrinka in the other match in the John McEnroe group and the Japanese takes the opening set with ease, 6-2 clinching it with a lovely drop volley at the net.
The man from the land of the rising sun, would be able to take control of the second in the fifth game, as Wawrinka leaves this return only to see the ball land just inside the baseline.
But the man known as Stuckey in some circles, that circle being four Sports Scene employees would not go away quietly ripping a forehand deep inside the baseline.
Unfortunately the Swiss could not match Nishikori's form -- as he puts another ball long, as the Japanese prevails in straight sets and needed only an hour and seven minutes to clinch victory.
