The Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council says the interpretation of Article 104 of the Hong Kong Basic Law is absolutely necessary and timely. A spokesperson from the office says the interpretation shows the central government's firm opposition to the so-called Hong Kong independence, as well as safeguards the rule of law and common aspiration of Hong Kong residents.
The Hong Kong Basic Law should be carried out fully, and activities that advocate a splitting of the nation or 'Hong Kong independence' are not allowed. The spokesperson also added that the central government believes Hong Kong residents will recognize the dangers of a separatist sentiment, and safeguard the long-term stability and prosperity of the region.
