The One Country Two Systems Research Institute based in Hong Kong has said the NPC's interpretation of the Basic Law is timely and of great necessity.
"The legal system in Hong Kong has decided the NPC has the authority and power to interpret the Basic Law," said Cheung Chi-Kong, Executive Director, One Country Two Systems Research Institute.
"The central government has a policy, which is to deal with the most urgent and important things, and leave the others to Hong Kong's legislative council. And now, the NPC's explanation is to protect national dignity and territorial integrity at the highest level, in order to safeguard our national interest."
