In Beijing, Chinese legislators have been reviewing a "draft interpretation" of Article 104 of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region's Basic Law.
Article 104 pertains to the national government's requirement to uphold Hong Kong's Basic Law. The review comes after the illegal actions of two Hong Kong lawmakers-elect who violated the Basic Law's provisions at a swearing-in ceremony for the region's legislative council in October.
The Chinese lawmakers agreed the pair had humiliated the nation and its people, damaged the territory's rule of law, corrupted the "One Country-Two Systems" policy, and posed a grave threat to China's sovereignty and security. They also said it is necessary to protect the interests of the people of Hong Kong as well as China's national development.
