Experts in Hong Kong agree that the NPC Standing Committee has the right to interpret the region's Basic Law.

"I think the reason for the interpretation of this law is because, recently in Hong Kong, some of the candidates have done something against the national interest and national security of China. And also it is against the completeness of the country's interest. Because of this reason, the NPC standing committee has to take up its rights and also its constitutional responsibility to interpret the basic law. I think this is a very legitimate and timely to solve this problem," Pro. Yuk-Shan Wong, president of The Open University of Hong Kong, said.

"The NPC standing committee's decision, I don't think has in anyway has challenged the Hong Kong rule of law. I think it is totally appropriate at this stage because the NPC has the right and constitutional power to make those interpretations. In this case, it is not just a matter of Hong Kong... it is a matter that challenges China's sovereignty," Eliza Chan, member of National Committee of The CPPCC, said.
