After a best ever performance at an Olympics, Britain’s athletes were paraded through the streets of Manchester to celebrate their achievements in Rio. Team GB was able to finish above China in the medal table at this year’s games, second only to the U.S.

While the team featured a crop of upcoming young stars, veteran competitor Jessica Ennis Hill used this opportunity to wave goodbye to fans following her retirement announcement last week.  
 
The Sheffield-born Ennis-Hill first rose to prominence in 2009, when she won gold in the women’s Heptathlon at the world Championships in Berlin, a feat she repeated last year in Beijing. The 30-year-old’s crowning moment came at the London Olympics four years ago, when she picked up a first place podium finish in the same event.

With her was also the Paralympic team, runner up to China in the table last month with 64 medals in total, but the day was all about the track and field star who, after picking up a silver in Brazil, feels now is the right time to call it a day.
