At Qiantang River in eastern China, the yearly tidal bore is taking place. More than 100,000 people are in Haining city to witness huge waves moving up the river.
Huge waves roar up the Qiantang River
The world’s largest tidal bore lasts for about a week every year during the Mid-Autumn Festival. The gravitational pull on the tide from the moon and the sun is strongest during this time.
When the tide hits the bottleneck at the river’s estuary, waves are pushed upstream. Waves up to two meters high were seen on Sunday, the biggest so far this year.
Local authorities are urging people to stay safe.
