Team North America would be playing Sweden at the World Cup of Hockey. The continental squad is made up of players 23-and-under from the US and Canada, and needed to win in order to stay alive. Nathan McKinnon and his teammates had their backs to the wall as they were forced into overtime by the Swedes, a loss and they would be out.
The teams are tied 3-3 after regulation, and the extra session is extra entertaining, as it's 3-on-3. North America have a glorious chance but Henrik Lundqvist makes a miraculous save on Connor McDavid. The Swede prolonging the game with the toe save. McDavid cannot believe it
Later on in the stanza, and the continentals are stopped on a 2-on-1, and the Swedes break out, Daniel Sedin all alone in the other end, but he is turned away by Jonathan Gibson on the doorstep -- and the play continues. The youngsters on the attack -- Ryan Nugent-Hopkins fires this puck high, but the Canadian wheels around to steal it back and pass it to Nathan MacKinnon, who makes 18 moves on Lundqvist and beats him backhand-shelf. North America wins a wild one 4-3 in overtime and stay alive in the tourney.
And Team Canada rolled to another victory. Jonathan Toews leading the way for the defending champions scoring twice in a 4-1 win over previously undefeated Team Europe. The Canucks are the only team in the tournament yet to lose a game, finishing the pool stage with a perfect three-and-oh record. Outscoring the opposition 14-3 in those three games.
